Click-through rate, or CTR, tells you how many of the people who saw your advert, search result or email went on to click it. It is one of the first numbers to check in any campaign, because nothing else can happen until someone clicks.
What CTR means
CTR is the share of people who saw something and clicked it. The formula is simple: clicks divided by views (also called impressions), multiplied by 100.
- 100,000 people see your advert.
- 1,000 of them click it.
- Your CTR is 1%.
Why CTR matters
A low CTR means your message is not landing with the people who see it. A high CTR shows it is. On most advertising platforms, a stronger CTR also tends to lower your cost per click, because the platform rewards adverts that people find relevant. The same budget then buys more visitors.
CTR also gives you an early warning. You can read it within days, long before sales figures tell you whether a campaign works.
What is a good CTR?
There is no single right answer. It depends on the platform, the audience, the offer and how many people already know you. Our ROAS calculator uses 0.5% as a cautious planning figure, 1% as typical and 2% as optimistic. Those are planning assumptions, not industry benchmarks, and results vary depending on the offer, the product, demand, quality and the systems in place.
Compare your CTR with your own past campaigns first, then with similar ones.
What affects your CTR
- Audience: the right people click, the wrong people scroll past.
- Headline and image: they decide whether anyone stops scrolling.
- Offer: a clear reason to click beats a vague promise.
- Placement: where the advert appears changes who sees it and in what mood.
- Frequency: people stop clicking when they see the same advert too often.
How to improve your CTR
- Test two headlines at a time and keep the winner.
- Speak to one problem your customer has, in their own words.
- Use a real, clear image instead of a generic stock photo.
- Narrow the audience before you widen it.
- Add one clear call to action, such as “Get a free quote”.
- Refresh adverts that people have already seen many times.

A high CTR with no sales usually means the advert promises more than the page delivers, or it attracts curious people rather than buyers. That is why CTR tells only half the story. The other half is your conversion rate, which measures how many clicks turn into customers. Read our guide to CVR, then see how the two work together.
Where CTR fits in the customer journey
CTR does its main work in the first two stages of the 12-stage customer journey: Awareness and Interest. Those are the moments when people first notice you and decide whether to find out more.

Why CTR matters to your business
A healthy CTR means the right people notice your message and want to know more. First, test one change at a time. Then keep what works, so every pound of ad spend buys more attention.
